Meditation can help with stress & anxiety disorders after heart surgery

Who Are You And Why Should I Listen To You?

My name is Vic Daly and 27 years ago, I was a struggling with chronic stress and anxiety disorders after heart bypass surgery.

My story

It is sometimes difficult to get it across to people and friends outside of meditation, that meditation can be your body’s own pharmacy. Let me try to explain that in a little more detail.

Meditation can and will help repair your heart.

A bold statement I know but true. When I say heal I do not mean the heart can actually heal itself to its original state after a heart attack, because certain parts of your heart muscle sadly die.

Stressed Out

Bypass surgery

Therefore, after bypass surgery the remaining heart muscle has to compensate for this and this is where meditation comes into its own… your own perfect little pharmacy.

Twenty-seven years ago

Twenty-seven years ago, I personally went through a series of heart attacks (three) one after the other… ouch, yes it was unbelievably painful.

Post-Surgery

A few months after surgery and still hurting, I complained to my local GP that my chest was hurting badly. He said it is all in my mind… how in hell's name he could justify saying that to me… ruddy donkey doctor!

Proper doctor – Human

I took it upon myself to see a private doctor out of desperation. He used acupuncture of all things on my sternum. Yep it worked on day one, no more after surgery pains… I am a believer. The only pains he could not deal with were the pains of despair. Stress and anxiety were running amok, I was a type A person trapped in a type Z body something was about to give.

Meditation Classes

This private doctor ought to have the Nobel Prize for his next suggestion. My newfound doctor suggested Meditation. I must admit I had a little smirk or was it a wry smile at his suggestion. Meditating… you have to be joking. No, he was serious… serious about me giving meditation a go.

Post meditation Classes

I can live with myself now, and my friends and family can too… what a personality change that came over me… a different me a more relaxed me. I had ridden myself of the stress and anxiety that threatened to hospitalize me - or worse.

My perfect pharmacy (meditation)

I have now made meditation a big part of my life… without it I would shudder to think what would have eventually happened to me. I can guess but I will not go there… way too dark!

I have had past friends and acquaints who were not quite so lucky. After surgery and numerous tablets, patches and whatever they still did not manage to survive many years after surgery. By going back to their old ways, sadly nothing was going to change for them.

I am so, so grateful for meeting the right doctor at the right time. The right advice and encouragement has more than compensated for my losses.

Helping hand...

If you are reading this post and really needing some extra sound advice on anything to do with meditation, then I am here to help you. If you are suffering with any stress related problems then I am sure that through my webpages I can offer you some real relief.

So, just as this private doctor was there when I really need him – I am here for you too… if you need me.

information overload, trying to piece it all together. As I said earlier stick with
me and you’ll do fine.

Information Overload Continued…

Analysis Paralysis or Paralysis of Analysis.

The state of you over analysing can stop you in your tracks completely
and overwhelming you with too much information, and almost stopping you
from taking any action at all.

The Secret

The secret to learning meditation is sticking with one system… hopefully with
my system… Alpha Waves And Beyond… where everything is all under one
roof. Your one stop meditation pit stop.

Keeping Your Calm – Fast Action Technique

[spacer height=”20px”]Keeping Your Calm

Worried!

Worried! (Photo credit: photoloni)

[spacer height=”20px”]What I am about to show to you is dynamite, but not the exploding type :O)

[spacer height=”20px”]In today’s post, I will show you a technique that can help you find your calm.

This may seem a little strange to say the least but it really works.

[spacer height=”20px”]Fast forward. Bedtime is approaching fast and you know that you are going to be in for a rough night of churning over your problem and awakening in the morning feeling like something the proverbial cat dragged in.

[spacer height=”20px”]Put away your doubts until you have read on…

A little doll

You place a little doll under your pillow or on your bedside table… eh I hear you saying?

You then tell the little doll your worries, but make sure no one is listening (whisper) or your better half will not know what to make of you… only joking 😉

The power of release

It is all about the power of release… and letting go of your worries just as children do, a simple form of psychology. The important thing to remember is that you must have a little faith knowing that the doll will do its work. The doll will do the worrying for you… great isn’t it?

[spacer height=”20px”]Read on…

Now you are beginning to wonder

Have I lost the plot somewhere along the line… you are wondering… are you not.
[spacer height=”20px”]Right lets get onto the meaty bit, because I know you really want to know what all this is about don’t you.

[spacer height=”20px”]The history of the doll – The worry doll

An assortment of Guatemalan worry dolls made from wire, paper and cotton fabric and thread, with hand-drawn faces. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

[spacer height=”20px”]The worry doll originated from Guatemala in Central America by the Mayan Indians. They made these miniature dolls to take away worries from their children. These dolls were originally made of rough pieces of twig or small splinters of wood and then covered in colored string or cloth.

History of using the worry doll

The children used to talk to these little dolls and tell them all their worries, and after telling the doll their worries they would then place the doll under their pillow and the doll would then take care of their worries for them.

How to make your own worry doll

The frameworks for the doll, try using smoker’s pipe cleaners, which are very flexible. You can also use cocktail/toothpicks to save you looking for splinters :O))

[spacer height=”20px”]You then wrap colored cotton wool around the framework making a beautifully colored doll of your choice.

Where to place the worry doll

[spacer height=”20px”]Place the worry doll in a little box or a pouch as shown in the enclosed pictures

Worry Doll

Worry Doll

This is how it works[spacer height=”20px”]

You tell the doll your problem and then place the doll inside a little box or pouch. It does work… all you have to do is make it work for you. Put away your doubts and give it a go.

If you can really suspend your doubts I am sure you can. It is all about transferring your doubts elsewhere whilst this works for you.

[spacer height=”20px”]You can do it!

[spacer height=”20px”]Let me know how you fare… share your experience

[spacer height=”20px”]Love and Peace to you all

Meditation: Is It Difficult?

Meditation: Is there any effort needed?[spacer height=”20px”]

Is meditation going to be difficult?[spacer height=”20px”]

Cuneus.

Cuneus. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Meditation is not easy but nor is it going to be hard and what I mean by that is you just cannot expect to open a fancy little box and out pops a genie with a ready-made easy peasy lemon squeezy system tailored just for you. Hoping that it will all work for you on day one… well I am sorry to have to tell you up-front it is not going to happen. No siree![spacer height=”20px”]

Meditation requires a little determination on your part.[spacer height=”20px”]

Ooh, does that have you worried…? Yes, I said a little determination on your part! You need to make up your mind that meditation is for you, and that you are prepared to put in the little effort required to make it work for you. All meditational paths lead to the same outcome… a quiet serene place called Alpha Level, also known as Alpha Waves.[spacer height=”20px”]

Explanation of Alpha Level/Waves:[spacer height=”20px”]

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/alpha+wave

Noun 1. alpha wave – the normal brainwave in the electroencephalogram of a person who is awake but relaxed; occurs with a frequency of 8-12 hertzalpha rhythmbrain wavebrainwavecortical potential – (neurophysiology) rapid fluctuations of voltage between parts of the cerebral cortex that are detectable with an electroencephalograph

Put aside your worries…[spacer height=”20px”]

Do not worry or beat yourself up over whether you can reach Alpha Level; it just happens so naturally without any effort on your part. Your part (the effortless mantra) is to use a mantra as a tool/key to reach Alpha Level. When you repeat your chosen mantra slowly and deliberately, you will eventually reach Alpha Level. However, it will take a little time and not happen overnight.[spacer height=”20px”]

Choose an easy mantra something like – relax and yes you will relax.[spacer height=”20px”]

Did you know that seasoned meditators reach Alpha Level in less than five seconds, which is not impossible for you to do too? However, that depends on you and your determination it has to be worth it… has not it.[spacer height=”20px”]

Persistence pays off whilst learning.[spacer height=”20px”]

Each morning on awakening, try to start meditating for five minutes and five minutes in the evening just before retiring. Each week you build up on this… until finally you are up to twenty minutes per session. More if you feel the need.[spacer height=”20px”]

Meditation is fun, simple and natural.[spacer height=”20px”]

Try not to make it more difficult than it needs to be, it should be effortless. Many would be meditators give up far too easily because they make a big deal out of it. Lighten up and things will magically happen. Believe me it will happen![spacer height=”20px”]

If you would like to make a comment or ask, a question then please hit the comment tab above or below.[spacer height=”20px”]

P.P.S. Remember we all have to start somewhere, so why not make your comment or question – after all, I am here for you. If there is something bothering you or if there is something, you need clarifying, ask me. That is what this website is all about… helping you.[spacer height=”20px”]

Itch Vs Your Scratch – What Should You Do?

A prickly subject…

Itch Verses Your Scratch

English: A man trying to reach for a scratch a...

English: A man trying to reach for a scratch at itch sensation on his upper back. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

There will be times when your meditation session is just not going in the right direction for you, and there are things like an itch or a nagging ache or something of that nature that wants your immediate attention… and yes it wants it now. Yes now! This very minute![spacer height=”20px”]

Sooo, what do you do? Well there are a few hardened sadists out there… well that’s what I call them, and they are absolutely adamant that you should just ignore the itch or ache and eventually it will go away. Yeah I bet it will. Well my thoughts on that are the complete reverse. I bet your glad I said that, well read on…[spacer height=”20px”]

If you have got an itch come-on let’s just get it over with and make your scratch, no one’s looking… and you can do it in a slow but sort of unconscious way as possible and the same with the ache, sidle yourself into a more comfortable position… you’ll know when your there… of course you will the ache will hopefully have disappeared. So fellow meditators why suffer. You’re not Tibetan monks… or are you?[spacer height=”20px”] Why these hardened and wizened meditators say you should just ignore your bodily wants or needs beggars belief. Lets be absolutely honest with each other, you want to enjoy your meditation session and the pleasures it brings and not have to endure it with teeth almost grimaced.[spacer height=”20px”]

Squirrel scratching the armpit with its hindlimb
Squirrel scratching the armpit with its hindlimb (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Aside from stressing yourself out, I personally think it is the old school coming to the surface or something like that, where they are akin to Masochists… I hope I’ve got that in the right context.[spacer height=”20px”] Those old ideas should be left where they belong (in a lead lined locked box) because they are not needed in today’s world that’s for sure. The next thing they’ll have you doing is the hot bed of coals walk… yeah that will definitely turn you on.[spacer height=”20px”] So my dear friends if you have got an itch… what do you do? Scratch it of course just like you would do any other time of the day. I mean you wouldn’t put up with it normally would you? What you have to remember is that whilst you think and concentrate on your itch you’re not meditating are you? Your itch just gets worse and worse whereby you start concentrating on it and giving it your full attention. So…

Catch it and Scratch it!

Don’t climb the walls trying to suppress it.

An ache can come on out of the blue, and you have notice when and how these are coming about, and is it on a regular basis. Is it the way you are sitting or have you shifted position without realizing it?[spacer height=”20px”] So in a little nutshell your urge to scratch can become so powerful in grabbing your attention that it starts to drive you half barmy with agitated thoughts, why deny the scratch because of something you have read or heard elsewhere. Just go for it! As I said earlier catch it and scratch it![spacer height=”20px”] Let me know how you feel about… Itch verses your scratch… do you agree or?[spacer height=”20px”] Hit the comments tab with your views or opinions.[spacer height=”20px”] Love to hear from you all…[spacer height=”20px”] Love and Peace[spacer height=”20px”] Vic… The Meditational Mojoist!

Breakthrough for Meditators – Let Me Introduce You To – The Nah Method – (in the now)

Breakthrough for Meditators…

Let Me Introduce You To:

The Nah Method (in the now)

~  ~  ~

Universe

Universe (Photo credit: Loulair Harton)

~  ~  ~

Hi again guys,

As promised in my earlier post… here is something for you 😀

What I have for you in today’s post is something of immense value in my opinion, and will most certainly enhance your personal experience during meditation, instead of feeling that your quiet meditation session is or has been ruined by unknown forces.

These particular forces are like the chattering sounds of let’s say the vast universe (outer space noises) like we have all heard on television or at the cinema if you like,  or like the telephone system, sounding as if though it has gone completely and utterly haywire with trillions upon trillions of unintelligible voices all descending on you at once, eventually bringing you out of sync and ruining your meditation session.

Question to the universe

Whilst meditating one particular night, I asked the universe for help to an age-old problem which most if not ALL meditators encounter every time they meditate.

The problem: Whilst meditating and repeating my mantra and going into Alpha Level – Bish Bash Bosh and that invisible pain in the butt arrives completely unannounced in all his/her glory to ruin my meditation session.

Who or what, is this pain?

Let me introduce you to the invisible pain called “Critic Nag” you know, the chattering monkey that is always there and trying his/her best to foil your meditation session.

When Alpha Level has been reached, the mind with the help of “Critic Nag” tries to take over and ruin your blissful state of nirvana.

When your mind begins to start chattering either in the past or the future, you have to repeat your mantra again and again to bring you back on course to the NOW…  the present.

The answer from the universe

The nah method: What came back from the universe in answer to my question was this… NOW… as simple as that… but pronounced “nah” – a one (1) syllable word as opposed to a double syllable like relax re-lax.

What I have found is that after reaching Alpha Level and meditation is in full session, the pain in the butt turns up, upon realising the unwanted interruption has arrived, is to bring the mind back to the (NOW), and is to use the single syllable word “nah” now.

Breakthrough

This is a real breakthrough (and make no mistake) in meditation terms, and I shall definitely be using this “nah” method, throughout my meditation sessions… an answer from the universe… so simple – so quick, but of immense value to fellow meditators.

So to recap

When you are meditating and unwanted thoughts are eventually observed – and they are not always observed immediately – sometimes it might be seconds before you realize that you are off course, or it can be that many minutes have slipped by before you realize that “Critic Nag” has taken you down his desired path. So use the “nah” method instead of your normal mantra at this stage, as it is quicker and easier to say, when the pain arrives.

Trigger word

What you have to understand is that your mantra is a trigger word to bring about Alpha Level… and the same can be thought of the word “nah” as your trigger word to rid yourself of unwanted noises.

So you are now finally armed with your brand new anti-invisible pain reducer… the nah!

Mantra

Please note: that you do not replace your normal mantra of choice, with “nah” ONLY use the “nah” method when you feel there is a need because of unwanted internal background noises.

Well guys, I hope you have found the above information useful, as I most certainly have.

Why Meditate? Part 2 – Vic… The Meditational Mojoist!

Why Meditate? Part 2

Vic… The Meditational Mojoist!

Hi again guys,

Welcome to my NEW SERIES… Why Meditate?

For the next few weeks, months or however long it takes me, I promise I will try to discuss a newcomer’s most probable questions and their issues on a regular basis.

Now Guys, here’s your chance… if there is a question you want to ask… then please ask me… I don’t bite… honest 🙂 as I have said… I am here for you.

In part 2 of – Why Meditate?

Today I want to cover the following:

• How long do I have to meditate for?
• How many times a day do I have to meditate?
• *What can I expect with regular meditation?
• Your concentration will improve
• What is a Mantra?
• Your recall (memory) will improve
• Your heart rate will stabilize

How long do I have to meditate for?

In an ideal world 15-20 Minutes, (3) times a day… but anywhere between 5-10 minutes to start off with in your early days, or until you can meditate for a 15-20 minute session without any problems or distractions.

How many times a day do I have to meditate?

There is no given… if you can meditate for 15-20 (3) times a day then that’s really fantastic. Twice a day is the norm and is also really great. And once a day is goodish… I hope that words in the English dictionary? 🙂

But you really do need to step up the ante and try for twice a day. Once a day is okay… but please don’t beat yourself up if you can’t manage more.

*What can I expect with regular meditation?

• Your concentration will improve

When you need to concentrate on something whether it is studying or trying to understand something, you need to get into Alpha Level and find your silence… then concentrate on the task in hand.

If you start to lose concentration repeat your mantra… such as re-lax. [kc_background_pac_2_highlight_1 size=”36″ color=”#000000″]RE-LAX[/kc_background_pac_2_highlight_1]. Repeat this mantra until the word/mantra becomes meaningless… meaningless meaning you are not able to mentally repeat this word/mantra in your mind.

It is then you are still and there is silence which is known as Alpha. IF your mind starts to wander, which it WILL… get back on course by repeating the word/mantra again and again and yet again if necessary to bring about the stillness… the nothingness.

• What is a Mantra?

The best way I can explain this to you is as follows: A mantra is a word, a sound that has no real meaning.

What mantra can I use or should I use?

May I suggest you use the word re-lax as your mantra, which is easy to say within your mind.

[kc_heading_pac_18_background_1 size=”50″ color=”#ffffff” ]Re-lax, re-lax, re-lax[/kc_heading_pac_18_background_1]

Repeat this mantra until there is a stillness/nothingness… when there is stillness/nothingness… you have finally arrived at Alpha.

• Your recall (memory) will improve

You need to recall something important and the way to go about this is to find a quiet place and repeat your mantra over and over until there is stillness. It is there you will find your answer to your question… but this does take some practice on your part.

It is achievable in a few months… so stop worrying it doesn’t take years… just practice. Honest!

• Your heart rate will stabilize

Yes your heart rate will stabilize itself through meditation. Whilst meditating, your heart rate decreases by at least five (5) beats per minute… so this means that a twenty (20) minute mediation session, your heart in fact beats less…true.

That’s one hundred (100) beats less for each twenty (20) minute session. So twice a day that’s two hundred (200) beats less for your heart to beat, and three times a day… well now you’re talking, three hundred (300) beats less.

Now this is really taking the work load off your heart in a big, big way… seriously.

The Incredible Journey+Questions+Answers

My Incredible Journey…

Hi Guys,

Meditation for beginners is a journey into the unknown, and a journey that will last you… your lifetime.

Let me try to explain…

The benefits that I encountered were absolutely incredible, as I said in  About Vic Daly meditation took me out of my self-imposed shell which I had obviously crawled into, to escape the real world after my heart surgery went pear-shaped… and to be told by the hospital heart consultant at the young age of 43, after all the hoping and praying that the operation was going to be totally successful… and then to be told that you will never be able to return to work again, it left me completely and utterly devastated. It was something to do with the left ventricle and that it was apparently un-repairable, owing to the series of heart attacks.

Words really escape me…

My old doctor… the army (Major) horse vet. Told me I was suffering from a frozen shoulder, and that my needless silly worrying about angina and heart attacks were all in my imagination, and were completely unfounded. Yet less than one month later and three heart attacks… one after the other, my wife found herself ringing for an ambulance… I guess he was wrong… and he was still allowed to practice. God help us all!

Very frightening, the first heart attack at home over the weekend on a (Sunday)of all days, the next whilst in the ambulance, and the third and last in the hospital entrance doorway. I was out like a light… it was almost goodnight nurse!

Hello world…

Three days later, on awakening from an induced coma and badly wanting a wee, I re-entered the world again. That army (Major) vet doctor!  I can remember him with his ho-hum army fashion, and his hands on hips… still playing the stiff upper-lip dads army Major… that young men of 43 DO NOT have heart attacks.

Light at the end of the tunnel…

It was only after a chance meeting with this new doctor (different practice) who took an interest in me, and suggested that I took up T.M – Transcendental Meditation. Since then I haven’t looked back. A real life-saver! Honest!

New home – New life…

When my wife, Margie, and I left the shores of England to set-up home in sunny Spain, things in life took on a different slant. A more relaxed me thanks to my new doctor and thanks to my wife for taking up the reins when I was incapable of making any decisions, and suggesting we sell up and start a new life in Spain to aid my recovery. Plus I am now equipped with my new life saver T.M – Meditation. And of course my lovely wife for all of 48 years… Margie 🙂

Is anything bothering you?

If you have anything that is bothering you whether it’s your health or other problems that just seem insurmountable… that is when meditation comes into its own. Your very own Swiss Army Knife… your de-stressing kit.

I am here for the long run, and I am aiming to reach one hundred and a little beyond… and why not? 🙂

Why Meditate? OK – I’ll Tell You Why…Part 1

[kc_heading_pac_11_headline_sub_6 size=”33″ color=”#996600″ ]Why Meditate?[/kc_heading_pac_11_headline_sub_6]

Hi Guys,

Well, there are numerous reasons for you to start mediating on a regular basis.

Just a few minutes per day… say anywhere between 15-20 minutes can set you off onto a new path in life.

How many times a day do I need to meditate?

• Well, once a day is good
• Twice a day is better

• Three times a day is fantastic

When and where do I meditate?

Ideal times during the day are:

• On rising – This can be with you propped up in bed, or sitting in your favourite comfy chair
• Early afternoon or late afternoon – your comfy chair
• On retiring – in bed propped up – or your comfy chair
But all the above means nothing and is not written in stone… you just have to find your own ideal place to meditate, and your ideal times that suit you…  so please don’t fret.

Meditation and reaching Alpha Waves And Beyond will come about naturally and effortlessly 🙂

Please Note:

Each time you meditate… try to meditate on an empty stomach.

‘So, what can I expect?’ I hear you say.

What you can expect with regular mediation are the following, which will help you stabilise your life to a healthy level:

• Your concentration will improve
• Your recall (memory) will improve
• Your heart rate will stabilize
• Improve your quality of life
• Normalize your blood pressure
• Increasing your learning abilities
• Increase your productivity
• Improving your performance
• Improve your relationships
• Relief from your dreaded insomnia
• Reduce your dependency on alcohol and cigarettes
• Increase your self-esteem
• Increase your reaction time
• You will be able to read faster… I will explain in another post
• Rid yourself of bad habits
• You will be able to rest easier
• You will awaken feeling refreshed
• You will be able to take the dullness out of life
• Plus, plus, plus…

I don’t want to fill the page at this stage for fear of overwhelming you… but the list is absolutely endless. I could go on and on but I won’t…

You see, setting yourself up with a good regular meditation program will most certainly help you stabilize your nervous system… which is the power house to your health.

Not forgetting that your nervous system whether you know it or not… sends out signals good or bad, which can affect your wellbeing if left unchecked.

But please don’t forget that stress levels affect your whole wellbeing… seriously! I can’t stress that enough.

If there is one thing that I want you to take away from reading my posts is the following:

• You will only get out of life what you put into it
• I know at times it will seem pointless… but when the meditation system kicks in… and you reach Alpha,  you will be elated and life will seem more fruitful
• If you can manage meditating three times a day… your progress will be on fast track… no kidding
• There will be times when your emotions will take you by surprise … which I will get into later and all this is part of listening to me guiding you forward

So please watch out for future posts from me, which I am positive will put you on the right path to health and happiness… truly
